Starsand Island Beginner Guide: First Hours, Professions & Money

Last updated 2026-08-25 ยท Based on version 1.0 and community sources โ€” items marked โ€œTBCโ€ are awaiting verification.

New to Starsand Island? Here is the short version: follow the tutorial with your childhood friend Solara, sign up with all five profession mentors as soon as you can, prioritize Island Life Missions to unlock core features, hoard Softwood, Fibers, and Stones, and start your farm with Wheat. This guide walks through the first hours and the systems the game does not fully explain, based on the official guides and tested community sources.

Your First Hour: Tutorial and Setup

You start in a small starter home on the southern edge of the map. Your character's gender and name cannot be changed after creation (hairstyle, makeup, and outfits can). Solara, your childhood friend, runs the tutorial: she gives you an Axe blueprint, has you chop trees, then hands you a Matcha Double Bed blueprint to craft at the outdoor Worktable.

After the tutorial you are asked to pick a first profession from Crafter, Farmer, or Rancher. The game recommends Crafter, and third-party guides agree โ€” every other profession depends on tools that Crafting provides. More importantly: once the tutorial ends, you can visit all five mentors and open all five professions at the same time, so the "choice" is only about what you start with.

Early priorities reported by the TechRaptor walkthrough (written during Early Access):

Mission Types and What to Do First

The official Mission System guide defines four mission types and an explicit priority order:

TypeWhat it isPriority
Island Life MissionsMain milestones (Recent Returnee โ†’ Island Pro โ†’ Home Builder โ†’ Bright Star โ†’ Starsand Legend). Unlock core features, including land expansion eligibility.1 โ€” do first
Career MissionsProfession quests from each Mentor (Apprentice โ†’ โ€ฆ โ†’ Expert). Unlock tools, equipment, and core skills.2
Bulletin Board RequestsDaily requests at the Community Center board (limit starts at 2/day, refreshes 6:00 AM). Good for coins and materials.3 โ€” pick high-value ones
Side MissionsTriggered while exploring or chatting with NPCs.4 โ€” skippable early

Island Life progress is retroactive: goals you completed before unlocking a mission still count. This is also where you unlock the right to buy land expansions.

Stamina, HP, and the 2:00 AM Rule

You start with 300 stamina. Tilling, mining, fishing, bug catching, tree chopping, and the slingshot all drain it; at zero you simply can't do those actions (no fainting from empty stamina). Recover by sitting down, eating (Celeste Berries are the classic early snack), sitting on a cheap Stump Stool, or sleeping.

Community-measured costs from Early Access (may differ in 1.0): tilling 15, tree swing 3, harvesting 2, bug catching 4, fishing 10. Higher-tier tools hit multiple tiles but cost the same per swing, and the Mechanical Tiller eventually makes tilling free.

Two rules that catch new players:

The game is otherwise forgiving: no fall damage, no shop closing days, and you can save from the menu anytime.

Five Professions and Two Currencies

The five professions and mentors: Crafter (Zerine), Farmer (Dr. Graminova), Rancher (Pastelle), Angler (Delphin โ€” named Francis in early official guides before being renamed), and Explorer (Zephyria). The economy runs on two currencies:

Early Money: the Community-Tested Curve

The rough earning curve players converge on (from Steam discussions; individual numbers are player-tested, not official):

  1. Start with Wheat, then fast crops โ€” one player's pick for best early crop was Pepper (about 2 days 6 hours to mature, averaging roughly 45 gold/day by their math).
  2. Cook before you sell โ€” cooking can raise a sale price by close to 50%, and running fruit/veg through a Separator into pulp adds a quick +10%.
  3. Drink Mirthshroom Soup while harvesting โ€” its buff raises the chance of getting seeds, including Immortal Seeds, so you eventually stop buying seeds at all. This is the snowball core of farming income.
  4. Mid-to-late game: robots โ€” Mining Robots in the Moonlit Forest plus Logging/Gathering Robots on the farm are the community's favorite "set up once, collect forever" route; one player funded multi-million gold land purchases this way.

Jam and pickling sell at the biggest markup but are extremely slow to process, so they need many machines running in parallel. See the full money-making guide for details.

Don't Waste Your Starsand: Official "Skip for Now" Talents

The official Profession Talent guide explicitly lists talents not worth early points, including: Recuperate (sitting recovery is slower than just eating), Tiptoe, Earth's Bounty (tilling chests), Fisher's Gain (changes your catch pool and may lower income), several Rancher automation talents, and the Explorer's Narrow Escape and Turret Mastery. Note one genuine disagreement: TechRaptor's author actually recommends taking Recuperate early โ€” treat that one as a playstyle call.

Community-tested standouts worth points instead: stamina refunds on mining/chopping, crafting-time reduction (about โˆ’35% at max in one test), and the "Nutrient Absorption" line that boosts stamina gained from cooked food by +50%.
